Low Level Laser Therapy

Low Level Lasers were first seen to have a therapeutic effect on hair growth as early as the 1960’s when a study on their effect on tumors in mice actually saw a quicker rate of hair growth. Low level laser therapy or treatment is also known as red light therapy and cold laser therapy. More and more research conducted over the years further shed light on the therapeutic effects on the red laser light.

The treatment works by exposing the cells that grow the hair on our scalps to the therapeutic red laser light. Different wavelengths of light are able to penetrate to different depths into our skin and the light used in these Low Level Laser Treatments are able to penetrate to the base of our hair follicles. The light energy is absorbed by the cells and is able to be converted into the energy source that they use, ATP. With an increase in the energy available to the cell, a greater blood flow is drawn into the scalp. To use up this additional energy a greater source of oxygen and nutrients is needed hence a greater blood flow. Now that the cells have an higher level of energy and nutrients, a thicker hair can be grown at a quicker growth rate.

The Low Level Laser Treatment will also energize and awaken dormant hair follicles that have been weakened from Androgenetic Alopecia (genetic hair loss). Over years of suffering from Androgenetic Alopecia, each hair growth cycle becomes weaker and thinner. The Low Level Laser Treatment is able to reverse this process and help to restore the natural hair growth cycle.

The beauty of the laser treatment is that there are no side effects from the treatment, its non-invasive and it is painless. There are no contradictions with any other condition or medication and it can be used with other hair loss treatments. Studies have shown that dual therapies work better than any individual treatment on its own.

Results from the treatment take a minimum of 3-4 months for the first results to be seen. The treatment will only effect the growth that comes through after the treatment has started. The treatment promotes new growth phases to start in hairs that are in a resting phase. Once the new growth phase starts, a new hair starts to grow from the base of the hair follicle. This new hair will push the old hair out of the way, which is why in the first 4-6 weeks a greater shed of hairs is seen. Normally between 50-100 hairs are shed each day, but when suffering from Androgenetic Alopecia a greater number of hairs are in a resting phase. A successful Low Level Laser treatment will have to cause a greater shed of hair, so that the new stronger hair can grow through in its place.

Like any Hair Loss treatment, the full results from the low level laser treatment can take 12-18 months to be seen. The treatment must be continued to be used past seeing the full results to continue to keep hold of the improvements seen.
Low Level Laser is definitely a treatment you should consider, as the results from it can match the results from other FDA-approved medications. This is a treatment that can be used for both men and women of any age suffering from Androgenetic Alopecia. If you are already using a hair loss treatment, and want to add a new treatment into your regime to boost your hair then low level laser can definitely be the right treatment for you.
